Febrile Convulsions
Febrile convulsions are very common in children. As many as 1 in 20 children will suffer at least one convulsion between the age of 6 months and 6 years of age. It is very frightening to see a child having a convulsion, and many people have described it as looking like the child is dead or dying. However it is not as serious as it looks and very rarely will cause lasting damage.
A febrile convulsion is caused by an extremely high or a sudden rise in body temperature. The child will become unconscious and its body will go stiff with jerking limbs. This ‘fit’ should last no longer than 2 minutes. What to do if your child suffers a febrile convulsion:
- Lie the child on its side, with the head at the same level or slightly lower than the body.
- Sponge the child with cool water.
- Do not shake the child.
- If the convulsion lasts longer than 10 minutes, call an ambulance.
