Manual Handling in Childcare
Childcare workers regularly pick up children throughout the day; to put them on a changing table, to comfort them after a fall, and often a child will just want a cuddle.
Did you know that every time you pick up a child, you could be damaging your back? This damage will often not be seen for years but can be serious and very debilitating and is caused by years of not lifting heavy objects correctly.
By taking part in a manual-handling course, you will learn the proper techniques for lifting that will protect your back, shoulders and even arms from injury.

Learn first aid for your childs sake.. Child Safety Tips..
Febrile Convulsions
Febrile convulsions are very common in children. As many as 1 in 20 children will suffer at least one convulsion between the age of 6 months and 6 years of age. It is very frightening to see a child having a convulsion, and many people have described it as looking like the child is dead or dying. However it is not as serious as it looks and very rarely will cause lasting damage.
A febrile convulsion is caused by an extremely high or a sudden rise in body temperature. The child will become unconscious and its body will go stiff with jerking limbs. This ‘fit’ should last no longer than 2 minutes. What to do if your child suffers a febrile convulsion:
- Lie the child on its side, with the head at the same level or slightly lower than the body.
- Sponge the child with cool water.
- Do not shake the child.
- If the convulsion lasts longer than 10 minutes, call an ambulance.

VAT on defibs
The Irish governments.. Brian Cowen views on the issue
In relation to the VAT rate that applies to defibrillators, the position is that under the VAT Directive, Member States may retain the zero rates on goods and services which were in place on 1 January 1991, but cannot extend the zero rate to new goods and services. The zero VAT rate cannot therefore be applied to defibrillators which are subject to the standard rate.
In addition, Member States may only apply the reduced VAT rate to those goods and services which are listed under Annex III of the VAT Directive. While Annex III does include the supply of medical equipment for the exclusive personal use of a disabled person, it does not include defibrillators for general use. The reduced rate cannot be applied to the supply of defibrillators.
Therefore the only rate of VAT that can apply to the supply of defibrillators is the standard VAT rate which in Ireland is 21%.
